I read with great interest the letter from Jimmy Devlin regarding asbo's and evictions. His understanding of the needs of the wider community is spot on and I am sure that all those who have been affected by anti social behaviour appreciated his comments.
One young family was particularly traumatised by the actions of the family in question.
I do not accept that it was 'very harsh' to evict the woman and her family. Their behaviour would have continued indefinitely I'm sure, if left unchallenged. Although none of us derived any pleasure from this eviction, we did experience a deep sense of sheer relief in that we had finally been given back control of our own lives'.
ASBO's are not obtained as a result of childish pranks. Nor are possession orders. The family were given numerous warnings over a long period of time. Ultimately, the responsibility for their present situation lies solely with them.
And what about that emotionally battered couple whose young children were abused on an almost daily basis? They now have to rebuild their lives in another area of town, away from family and friends after being rehoused for their own safety. That is something I consider to be very harsh.
