A MYSTERIOUS hole has opened near a footpath next to the Burgy Banks in Islands Brow.
Campaigners fighting plans for houses to be built on the industrial alp reckon the incident casts further doubt on the stability of the land.
It is unclear whether the hole has been caused by a former mineshaft. However, it is believed to have been fenced off by the national coal authority. The opening, about four feet in circumference and three feet deep, is around 100 metres from the Chain Lane Community centre.
Mike Pape, of the Burgy Action group, said: "The point is that the ground where the hole is has been investigated. They have built a community centre on that land and a very large hole appeared at the back of that in the past. This casts doubts on the stability of the land and makes you wonder what has happened."
