A MAGNIFICENT fight back by Premiership outfit Old Congs after being behind three times during the game, gave the Haydock club a penalty shoot-out victory over Old Bootleians in the quarter final of the LCFA Intermediate Cup.
Goals from Izzy Yigit, Gary Arnold, Paul Barton and Darren Evans brought the Congs level at 4-4 after extra time and cool headed penalties saw them through.
Now at the semi-final stage, Old Congs have a great chance of being the first Haydock club to lift a County FA Cup since the outstanding Haydock Villa side in the 1936-37 season won the Junior Cup.
In Combination games, a full programme at last underway, Division Two leaders Top Nogs solidified their position with a 5-0 thumping of Orange House, goals via Mike Simmons (2), Paul Kenny, John Riley and Gareth Unsworth doing the damage.
Another club going great guns in that division, New Street, with lads from the Community Centre there, won handsomely at Cricketers 8-0, Clint Yoosi (2), Gary Kenny (2) and others from Joey Matthews, Sean McCarthy, Lewis Matthews and Alan Murphy. Rainford North End Reserves had a 1-4 away win a Dentons Green Reserves and OCS battled out a 2-2 stalemate with Boilermakers, Steve Jackson (jnr) and Adam Khan scoring for OCS.
The redoubtable Shoe keep reminding Combination clubs what a great mixture of experience and youth can be.
They won a hard game 1-0 against a talented Windle Hotel at Ruskin Drive.
Also in the Premier Division the Eccleston brothers, Kris and Paul scored for Clock Face Miners in a hard fought 2-2 draw against the Dragon.
Carr's Hotel have to thank striker Craig Jones for his magnificent hat-trick that gave his side a 2-3 away win at Dentons Green.
West Park Eccy's Arms were too good for Sidac Social winning at home 3-0.
Andy Innelli's strike for York resulted in a welcome 1-0 win over the Stars at Ecclesfield.
Sidac's second string came good, however, in Division One, Dave Ellis, Mike Berry plus an o.g. giving them a 3-0 win over Roundhouse.
Prescot Leisure Reserves are down in the mouth as a result of their 1-2 beating at home by Saracens Head, but British Lion go motoring on, this time goals from Chris Tunstall (2), Andy Burns and Mark Pinnington resulted in a 4-0 home win over Pilkington A.
This next Saturday, the league programme is slightly dented as five Division One clubs will be engaged in Northern Cup ties.
