NEWTON did not get the win they needed to leapfrog their opponents and take second place.

Collegiate started the game and looked the stronger side for the first 20 minutes when they bombarded the Newton line giving them little chance to clear the ball away.

Fortunately Newton's defence was up to the task and managed to start turning defence into attack driving the ball up the middle of the field.

Half way through the first half Collegiate got the break they were looking for overlapping the Newton line to score in the corner.

An inspired conversion from off the touchline by the Collegiate full-back who had previously missed two penalties from better positions saw them race into the lead 7-0.

Newton responded well and moved the ball up the field before an offload in the tackle gave D. Steel the opportunity to force his way through three defenders and ground the ball over the try line.

The conversion flew to the left of the posts so the score rolled on to 7-5.

That was how the first half ended, the game balanced on a knife's edge.

Newton got the second half started and looked the sharper side moving the ball about well but they couldn't seem to find the gap they were looking for.

Using the downhill advantage Newton pressed the Collegiate line but kept coming away empty handed.

Collegiate registered the next points from a penalty to make 10-5.

Despite 20 minutes of pressure and a missed penalty attempt Newton failed to get on level terms with Collegiate so a disappointed side saw their opportunity to move up the table disappear.
