Bold Miners 12

IN this pulsating local derby Haydock completed the double over their neighbours after getting off to a dream start with a try after only two minutes.

Haydock started the ball rolling when Haughey regathered his neat chip, before passing to Mark Forber.

He combined well with Appleton who sent Rotherham over the corner to put them 4-0 in front.

A drop goal from Wayne Bloor on 12 minutes added to that lead, but then Bold started to pile on the pressure.

They opened their account when a bad mistake by Haydock within their own 20 metre area resulted in a scrum from which loose-forward Dave Hill and scrum-half Mercer worked a set move that ended with the latter going over for a try.

Bold were now dictating the game and another mistake from Haydock was capitalised on by the visitors.

A neat chip was touched down by Bolton to put Bold 8-5 ahead on 23 minutes.

Dave Archer's fine run down the wing to put Haydock in a good position and from there they moved the ball about.

Mark Rigby broke through, going 15 yards before his neat pass sent Haughey over from 10 yards out. Matty Cunliffe converted to put Haydock 12-8 in front at half time.

A Cunliffe penalty made it 13-8 two minutes after the break and then in the space of three minutes Haydock scored twice, the first on 49 minutes.

After Pete Cahalin had gone close, the ball was moved out where Cunliffe gave it to Haughey who weaved his way round several players to score a great try from close range. Cunliffe's conversion made it 19-8 and then two minutes later Darrell Rotherham's great tackle dislodged the ball from a Bold player.

The ball was picked up, given to Haughey who passed to Archer, who went 20 yards to score. Cunliffe's conversion gave Haydock a commanding 25-8 lead.

Haydock were reduced to 12 men after having one of their players sin-binned and Bold started to take control.

The Yickers' defence held out until the last minute of the sin-binning period when Bold winger Burgess went in at the corner for a try to make it 25-12 on 65 minutes.

Man of the match for Haydock was Appleton with Bloor, Haughey and Carroll outstanding.

For Bold Hill, Lynch and Mercer had top games.
