POLICE are launching a major crackdown on yobs who put lives at risk by throwing bricks and stones at cars, taxis and buses.
Officers say they are responding to complaints from drivers who in some instances have had half house bricks hurled at vehicles.
High visibility patrols will take place in areas of the town where teenagers are reported to be throwing the missiles.
The problem is thought to have escalated in recent months and, though no-one has yet reported being seriously injured, many vehicles have been damaged.
Police, meanwhile, are urging townsfolk and parents to help tackle the problem. They want parents to find out what their children are doing.
Inspector Keith Brennan, from the police in St Helens, said: "Local people in St Helens should be able to travel within St Helens in safety and without fear.
Throwing objects at any vehicles is extremely dangerous - we need to stamp it out permanently.
"Anyone found to be throwing stones and causing damage or injury will be arrested and may face prosecution."
