BRIAN Spencer, Lib Dem group leader on St Helens Council, says he wants an honest debate with Shaun Woodward MP about reducing binge drinking in St Helens. Cllr Spencer describes a recent press statement from Mr Woodward as 'misleading', claiming his party want to give rights and responsibilities to 16-year-olds but have never advocated lowering the legal drinking age.

He said: "Mr Woodward should be asking his own government to get things right instead of sending out misleading press statements. Perhaps he should spend more time in the town and see for himself the problems caused by binge drinking. Properly managed and more flexible licensing hours could help reduce the problems caused by binge drinking and alcohol-related violence."
