DELIGHTED neighbours have claimed victory in their long battle to have traffic calming measures at a notorious accident hotspot near their homes and paid tribute to the Star for backing their campaign.

Neighbours on Granville Street, Gaskell Street and Parr Stocks Road, have been plagued by traffic accidents and near misses for several years.

Lee Melling who lives on Granville Street said there can be as much as four crashes a week near his home.

Last May, he told the Star about the desperate situation and the lack of speed bumps along the road.

The area was so poorly signed, he claimed, that drivers coming to the end of the junction were unaware of which way the cars were travelling on the one-way street.

Now the council have responded to demands and are due to install traffic calming measures along the road.

Mr Melling was delighted: "Three cheers for the Star," he said. "It's because it was in the paper that something is at last being done. It's more than a coincidence. Everybody here is made up, especially the older people."

A council spokesman said: "Work on a raised traffic table is taking place at the junction of Gaskell Street and Granville Street as part of the authority's accident prevention programme. In the past three years there have been 13 accidents at that junction with seven occurring in the past year. This new scheme should significantly reduce those figures."
