ON one of our visits to St Helens I saw in the Star letters (Dear Star February 10) the story of Eric's ghost.

Before I left and moved to Scotland as a driving instructor I was proud to serve in St Helens Borough police from 1967. At this time my cousin Harold Walker, better known as Harry was a serving officer.

On the night in question he was working at Sutton police box and I had been sent to Sutton from the old Town Hall station to work until 2am to cover.

It was about 1.30am and I was ready for home and the boss said I could finish at Sutton as it was near home (I lived in Sutton).

Harry came to the box and said he was going to check 'St Ann's and someone was in the graveyard, so we went to investigate.

There was a figure in the graves. We got closer and it was a middle aged woman, she was sobbing. We looked at each other. She needed help so we went into the yard, crossed between head stones and 'nothing', no sign of anyone and yet we were only yards away from her. She had a long dark blue coat, loose and muddy at the bottom. A black scarf over her head which was over her shoulders. She only had one long shoe/boot on her foot and tears on her face.

Then we, should I say, 'hurried back to the box. I finished late that night, I didn't feel like getting on my pushbike because it meant going past St Ann's.

We both decided never to mention it again as others would think we were mad. I don't know if Harry said anything, but not me.

I made discreet inquiries years after at the convent and was told it had happened before when crying had been heard, but was put down to 'kids'. But what we saw was no kid.
