LSH travelled back over the Pennines defeated but not downhearted after putting up a brave display against North One title challengers Hull.

An already weakened side suffered late withdrawals due to the flu virus leading to debuts for youngsters Ashley Stuart and Dan Barclay and recalls for Chris Stabler, James Donnelly and Chris Sheehan.

Hull, however, towered over LSH in every sense. Powerfully led by impressive Tongan imports Nomani Tonga and Meae David and backed up by the strong running of Matt Donkin and Danny Smith they were simply too strong and organised for a determined LSH.

After Hull had scored first LSH went in front after 21 minutes with a sparkling try from winger Stuart after a superb backs move.

The ball travelled at speed all along the back line from 30 metres out before the youngster sprinted round his marker for the score.

Simon Worsley converted and added a penalty before Hull, in what turned out to be a crucial period, replied with three more tries and a penalty before the break to establish a commanding lead 29-10.

The second half was much more even with Hull's four tries matched by three beauties from LSH at last showing what they can do.

First, Stabler showed a fine burst of speed when darting through a gap in the Hull defence from 40 metres followed by an opportunist interception try from flanker Phil Kearns running in from 60 metres.

The third came from stand off Worsley, clearly enjoying his new partnership with scrum half Graeme Barry, scoring neatly under the posts after a slick interchange between the two.

Time is now running out for Paul Woodward's men as they slip back again into the bottom three. With just five games left this Saturday's fixture at Moss Lane against Birkenhead Park (kick off 2.15) is crucial.

LSH must win to retain any realistic chance of survival in North One.
