A LAST-minute try by winger Lee Brown snatched victory for Brook and left Bold with the heartbreak of a third consecutive defeat at the death.

The visitors had the better of an error-riddled first quarter and should have scored when player/coach Darren Anders broke from a scrum only for the move to break down due to a sloppy pass with the line begging.

It was Brook though who opened the scoring when scrum-half Phil Anderton was tackled inches short of the line and from the ensuing quick play-the-ball Paul Toole sent prop Ste Moss crashing over.

After Andy Shaw had gone close to a second touchdown for Brook, Miners hit back with the best move of the half, prop Wayne Ashcroft combining with Darren Anders and Chris Burgess in a 70-metre effort that ended with full-back Carl Anders going over at the corner. Darren Anders converted to make it 6-4 to Bold at the interval.

Brook drew level 15 minutes into the second half with a penalty goal by Mark Gibson when Bold were caught holding down in the tackle following a Scott Lyon break.

As the game reached its final minute Brook launched one last attack and with everyone anticipating a drop goal attempt Andy Shaw found room on the right and sent out a superb pass for young winger Lee Brown to dive over in the corner with Gibson's touchline conversion completing the scoring.

Moss was selected as the Nexus man-of-the-match for the home side, with Barry McGilvray, superb in defence throughout, running him close.

Dave Hill picked up the award for Bold.

Waterhead A 22 B'brook A 16

FIRST team calls and cry-offs saw Brook seconds travel to Oldham for this top-of-the table clash with a skeleton squad that was further disrupted by three serious injuries.

To their credit though they produced a spirited performance and with a recognised goalkicker could well have taken the points.

Waterhead took an early lead with a try and a penalty goal but Brook hit back with tries by prop Phil Smith jnr. and Chico Wright.

The loss of skipper Ian Williams and Ant Halsall disrupted Brook's rhythm and Waterhead took advantage to regain the lead before the interval with a converted try.

Another injury to Phil Smith jnr. saw Brook reduced to 12 men early in the second half but they still managed to get their noses back in front with tries by Jon Hale and Ste Galvin.

Eventually though the home side's extra man proved decisive and they grabbed two tries and a goal to take the spoils.

The Santime Quarries man-of-the-match for Brook went to Jon Hale with Andy Tucker, Mick Ledger and Ian Dolan all playing well in a good team effort.
