TWOBAR Productions are celebrating the launch of their brand new night at The Naval Club, with the news that the legendary Damo Suzuki will be making a special appearance in May.

Following on from the highly successful Green Room and Zoo Bar nights, Twobar will now be holding regular events at their new home at The Naval Club on Volunteer Street, St Helens.

And the local live music promoters are thrilled to confirm that the singer from Krautrock pioneers Can will be performing there on 26 May.

Darren from Twobar Productions said, "We are really pleased to announce that Damo Suzuki, the legendary Krautrock maestro, is coming to St Helens at our new venue.

"Ol, Owen, Tol and myself would like to thank Paul Griff at the Zoo Bar, and Peter and Sharon at The Green Room for all their help over the last two years.

"We would also like to thank the many people that have been in attendance, supported and performed at previous Twobar events.

"Our last thanks goes to Vicky Andrews from The Star for her great help."

Kenji 'Damo' Suzuki was born in Japan in 1950, an expatriate street poet inspired by Jack Kerouac, who spent the better part of the late 60s wandering through Europe.

While busking in Munich in 1970 he was discovered by Can members Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, and with Suzuki in the new line-up, Can produced its most innovative and enduring work, including classic LPs like 'Tago Mago', 'Ege Bamayasi' and 'Future Days'.

After leaving the band in 1973 to become a Jehovah's Witness, Suzuki was absent for music from a decade until joining the band Dunkelziffer in 1983.

In 1986 he formed the Damo Suzuki Band with fellow Can alum Liebezeit on drums, Domink Von Senger on guitar and Matthias Keul on keyboards. Four years later the group mutated to become Damo Suzuki and Friends and in 1998 he founded the Damo's Network label issuing a series of live recordings.

Damo's backing band for the North West leg of his UK tour will be the trippy jazz collective Zukanican, featuring ex Spaceman3 and Spiritualised saxophonist Ray Dickerty.

Also on the bill are Super Numeri from the Ninja Tunes label and DJ Rasp from The Shakti.

Tickets for this event cost £6.50 and are only available from Kaleidoscope Records on Westfield Street from Monday 7 March, limited to 110 only.
