A MAN left partially paralysed after hitting his head following an alleged attack in Benidorm is now back home after being driven over 27 hours in a private ambulance thanks to donations from the community.
Andrew Frazer, 42, who works at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, only booked at the last minute to go on the trip on Wednesday, November 13 for his brother Ian’s birthday.
He booked after others in the travelling party dropped out late on and he did not get travel insurance.
In the early hours of the following morning, his family say that at around 1.30am Andrew, from Sutton, was taken to hospital with a bleed on the brain.
It is alleged while out in the Spanish resort he was punched before falling and hitting his head.
After initially receiving treatment in the form of wound closure at hospital immediately following the incident, he was sent away however after his brother grew more concerned for his safety and took him to another hospital which according to his family highlighted a bleed on the brain.
He was then taken for a craniotomy and put in a medically induced coma.
His fiancée Carrie flew out to be with him and a fundraising page was set up by a family friend, which has currently amassed more than £32,370 in donations.
On Wednesday, November 27, Andrew started his long and arduous journey home in a private ambulance at cost to the family – which thanks to the donations, means Andrew is now in Whiston Hospital.
His sister-in -law Claire Howard said: “We were hoping to get him home via Mediplane but medical staff made it clear he could not cope with this due to the pressure on his head especially after his surgery so instead he was driven over the Pyrenees in a land ambulance at great expense.
“It was decided to bring him to the local hospital, Whiston, where he is now and being assessed and a surgeon from the Walton Centre will come and review him and assess if he needs transferring there but for now we are just grateful he’s finally back home and getting the help he needs.
“It’s been hard trying to get information from Carrie and Ian while they were over here, but now we are all back together and we can offer them the right support too.
“We’ve been told by Whiston that it’s not going to be a short recovery but at least he’s in the right place now.”
The Star has also been in contact with the the Government's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office who confirmed they are supporting the family and is in contact with authorities in the area.
An FCDO Spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man hospitalised in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities”
