A MAN was arrested after a short police pursuit as officers swooped on a car. 

Residents reported seeing a police presence in the area of Elton Head Road on Wednesday evening, November 27.

At around 5.30pm officers saw a white BMW which they suspected of being driven by a disqualified motorist and a short pursuit ensued.

The car came to a stop at the junction of Elton Head Road and Sutton Heath Road.

The man ran from the car and was detained and arrested at 6pm on Lowfield Lane.

A 25-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of cannabis and driving without a licence or insurance.

He was taken into custody to be questioned.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a man has been arrested following an incident in St Helens on Wednesday, November 27.

"At around 5.30pm, patrol officers sighted a white BMW suspected of being driven by a disqualified driver.

"After a short pursuit the vehicle came to a stop at the junction of Elton Head Road and Sutton Heath Road.

"The man ran from the car and was detained and arrested at 6pm on Lowfield Lane."

The spokeswoman added: "The 25-year-old male from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of cannabis and driving without a licence or insurance.

"He has been remanded into custody for questioning."
