A CHURCH said it is working with police after a group of drunk people disturbed a Sunday morning Mass.

Officers received a report of the anti-social behaviour which took place at St Mary's Lowe House Church, on Crab Street, St Helens, on the morning of Sunday, November 3.

A police spokesman confirmed that an online report was received of people under the influence of alcohol entering Sunday morning Mass at the town centre Catholic church and making other members of the congregation feel intimidated and unsafe with their behaviour.

Lowe House Church hosts an 11am Mass each Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Liverpool said: “Following the recent disruption at St Mary’s Lowe House, we are working with Merseyside Police to restore peaceful worship at the church.

"The safety of our parishioners is of utmost importance to us.”

Police have vowed to give the church "extra passing attention" to reassure parishioners.

Local Policing Inspector Josh Griffiths said: “We are giving the church extra passing attention on Sunday mornings to provide some reassurance to the church and the congregation.

“We take any such reports very seriously and will take action to ensure that people feel safe in their places of worship.”
