AN UPDATE has been given on the expected opening date of the new facilities at the revamped Lea Green railway station.

Northern Rail has given an update after being approached by the Star over the long-anticipated renovation.

The station has undergone a £15m transformation but the project has been met by delays which have put the opening date back.

The project, which had initially aimed for a completion date during the summer of last year, was stalled due to bad weather hindering groundworks.

A key part of the station upgrade has involved the previously oversubscribed car park being replaced with a modern decked car park.

This is set to increase park and ride capacity to around 450 vehicles, enabling it to become a key commuter station for people who work in neighbouring cities.

Significant upgrades include a new station building at Lea Green with waiting room, toilets and other customer facilities.

Latest update from Northern

In August, Northern had said they were aiming to open the facilities this December.

However, the expected opening has now been put back to the new year, with an authorisation from the Office of Road and Rail (ORR) still outstanding.

Northern apologised for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing delay to the project.

A Northern spokesperson said: “We are looking at opening new facilities at Lea Green Station in early 2025, once the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has assessed our application for authorisation.

"The redevelopment will provide customers with a new multi-storey car park and a new station building containing a ticket office, waiting room and toilets.

“We understand that this project has taken longer than hoped and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

“We are confident it will deliver significant improvements for customers who use this station, following years of hard work and millions of pounds of investment provided by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.”

Lea Green station itself has remained open throughout the project and train services are still running.
