A DRIVING instructor is being praised by Willowbrook Hospice for raising more than £5,000 for them since 2017.

Former Sutton Manor miner Andrew Wood made the decision to donate after the union made a donation and then his loved ones used the hospice.

He said: “I used to be a coal miner and when Sutton Manor Colliery closed down, the union made a big donation to help build Willowbrook Hospice, this was where my initial connection started.

“In 2007, my Dad went into the hospice for a few days to give me and my Stepmum Margaret some respite. Their care was just what was needed, and we were eternally grateful for all that they did for us. Sadly he passed away, and then ten years later, so did Margaret.

“It was after her passing that I decided to do some fundraising for Willowbrook, starting with a Wing Walk. I raised a decent amount of money but wanted to do more.

“My career is as a Driving Instructor, and I get to meet so many people, so took this as an opportunity to donate the very first fee from the pupils who come to me.

“I always ask the pupil first to check they are happy with this, and they always are. I just think if we can all do something nice for others, then we should.

“I am a great believer in karma - what you put out into the world, good or bad, will come back to you.”

Willowbrook Hospice said: “Andrew’s unwavering support and commitment to our cause is nothing short of inspiring. Every penny he has raised over the years helps to provide vital care and support to those who need it most.

“Thank you Andrew for being so kind and for helping us continue to make a difference.”
