A LEADING figure in the local voluntary sector will stand for Labour at an upcoming council ward by-election.
Sally Yeoman, chief executive of Halton & St Helens Voluntary & Community Action will be the party's candidate for a vacant Blackbrook ward seat.
The by-election will be held on Thursday, December 12 following the death of Cllr Linda Maloney MBE last month.
Labour says Ms Yeoman is "well known locally among community and faith groups, with a real track record of serving residents through her extensive work as a leader of the voluntary service in St Helens".
She was recently awarded an MBE for her services to the community for the work she has done in the community.
After being announced as the Labour party candidate for Blackbrook, Ms Yeoman said “I am honoured to have been selected as Labour candidate for Blackbrook.
"It was really sad to lose Linda, who I knew and worked with for many years.
"She has left a huge legacy and I will do my very best to make sure the work she started, fighting for Blackbrook residents and being a strong voice in the Town Hall continues.
"Blackbrook is very special to me, the family have close links with the community especially Blackbrook Rugby League Club.
"I'm looking forward to the campaign and will do my very best for all the residents of Blackbrook and Haydock.”
The news of her candidacy was welcomed by Labour leader Anthony Burns, who said: “Cllr Linda Maloney MBE was such an important part of our team and a fantastic hard-working councillor for the residents of Blackbrook and Haydock and her death has shocked us all.
"In selecting a candidate to succeed Linda it was important that we selected a strong candidate with a proven track record and links to the ward, so we are delighted to have Sally on board.
"She has been a big part of delivering for St Helens residents over the last 18 years.
"She was a key figure in the response to the COVID pandemic helping to create the St Helens Together movement which helped residents and saved lives.
"Such was the effect of her work she was recognised at the highest level with the award of an MBE.
"She is perfect for the ward of Blackbrook too, with her family members actively involved in the running of Blackbrook ARLFC.
"She will be a fantastic ward councillor and will continue in Linda’s footsteps on the side of residents and being a strong voice for all of Blackbrook.”
St Helens North MP David Baines also offered his backing: “I have worked with her closely for many years and I have seen for myself the work she has done day in, day out to support residents, community groups and the faith sector in our borough.
"Sally cares passionately about people and works tirelessly to make a difference. I have no doubt she will be an outstanding champion for Blackbrook and a strong voice for everyone in our community.”
The current make-up of St Helens Council sees Labour hold 28 of the 48 seats.
