A HOMELESS man was punched and kicked in an "unprovoked attack" in St Helens town centre. 

Police are investigating after reports of the assault, which took place in Church Square on Tuesday evening last week, October 22.

At around 8.35pm officers received a report that a man in his 30s had been punched and kicked by a group of people.

The man’s rucksack was also taken and his mobile phone damaged. The rucksack was later recovered.

As a result of the attack, the man suffered soreness to his body, police said.

An investigation is underway and CCTV inquiries are being carried out.

'A totally unacceptable and unprovoked attack'

St Helens Neighbourhood Inspector Josh Griffiths said: “This was a totally unacceptable and unprovoked attack.

“Thankfully the man was not seriously injured but obviously has been left shaken up by his ordeal.

“Inquiries remain ongoing to find the people responsible and I would urge anyone with information to contact us.”
