A ST HELENS man has been jailed for two years and four months for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Liam Duffy, 33, of Sherdley Road, was jailed at Liverpool Crown Court today, Friday, October 25. He previously pled guilty in September.
Duffy will also serve a three-year disqualification from driving, which will begin when he is released. He will be required to pass an extended test after this ban comes to an end.
Dangerous driving
At around 10.55am on Friday, September 9 2022, emergency services were called to a report of a collision on Moss Bank Road in St Helens, involving a black Golf Volkswagen and a blue Range Rover.
A woman in her 70s was safely removed from one of vehicles and was taken to hospital with several fractures and other serious injuries.
Duffy was arrested and charged, following an extensive investigation.
Roads Policing Constable James Downey-Parkes, the investigating officer, said: "This was an entirely avoidable collision which resulted in the occupants of the VW Golf sustaining injuries.
Catastrophic consequences
"The Range Rover was driven in a reckless manner, resulting in a collision with the Golf when overtaking other vehicles. The woman sustained serious injuries and the impact of such an incident cannot be underestimated.
"CCTV and witness enquiries established the extent of Duffy’s dangerous driving and he will now serve a jail sentence and be disqualified from driving upon his release.
"Drivers taking unnecessary risks to save a couple of minutes from their journey time, lead to catastrophic consequences and I would urge road users to drive safely and responsible at all times. There is simply no excuse for endangering or causing significant suffering to others.
"We will not tolerate such poor standards of driving on our roads and to that end if you have any information about suspected dangerous driving, drink or drug driving or any other road issues, contact us when safe to do so via @MerPolCC, 101 or 999 if an incident is in progress, and we will do all we can to make the roads safer."
