The offending dog, which was not with its owner and not wearing a collar, ran way after the incident. He is described as a large black dog which had long hair and a white chest.
Police say that the area was searched to locate the dog and enquiries are ongoing to find the dog and its owner.
Detective Sergeant Dave Glover said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or knows the dog matching the description to please contact us as a matter of urgency.
“The victim sustained a deep laceration to his chin which requires plastic surgery. It is imperative that we find the dog so it cannot harm anyone else.”
