FIRE crews were called out to a blaze at an address this morning.

Crews descended on Cherwell Avenue, in Sutton Leach shortly before 8am on Wednesday, October 9.

Firefighters tackled the blaze, which was in a ground-floor garage at a detached property.

The flames had spread to a first-floor bedroom. 

A cordon was in place as emergency services dealt with the blaze, with four fire engines in attendance.

Crews, wearing breathing apparatus, put out the fire using a hose reel jet.

Firefighters have left the scene.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "MFRS attended an incident on Cherwell Avenue, St Helens, on the morning of Wednesday, October 9.

"Crews were alerted at 7.48am and on scene at 7.56am, with four fire engines attending at the height of the incident.

"This was a fire located in a ground floor garage of a brick-built detached property, that had spread to a first-floor bedroom.

"Two firefighters in breathing apparatus (BA) were committed with one hose reel.

"Crews made good progress with a further two firefighters using a hose reel jet externally to fight the fire."

He added: "Fire Service personnel inspected the loft for fire spread and the gas and electricity to the property was isolated.

"The fire was extinguished shortly after and crews monitored temperatures and checked the property for hotspots.

"An external handover has taken place and been completed with the occupant."
