A MAN was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after an assault in St Helens town centre. 

Residents reported seeing a large police cordon in place in the area of Victoria Square, close to the town hall, on the afternoon of Saturday, September 28.

The Star was able to obtain details in relation to the incident from police today.

Police confirmed that a man in his 40s had suffered a head injury after being attacked and was taken to hospital.

A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing GBH. He has been conditionally bailed as a police investigation continues.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We have arrested a man and are continuing to investigate following an assault last month in St Helens town centre.

"At around 3.30pm on Saturday, September 28, officers were called to Victoria Square to reports of a fight between males.

"A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with a head injury, and was later discharged following assessment.

"A 39-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and is on conditional bail pending further enquiries.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact us @MerPolCC or 101 with reference 24000832542."

The Star has previously reported on ongoing concerns over anti-social behaviour in the vicinity of Victoria Square.

Benches were removed from the area in front of the town hall in August due to the issues.
