LAST week, after the Swan in town closed its doors for the last time, we published the names of more than 60 of St Helens borough’s traditional pubs that we have lost since the early 80s.
We invited readers to fill in any gaps in this list – particularly in the Newton-le-Willows and Earlestown parts of the borough.
And we had plenty of replies with Colin Pritchard among those listing Earlestown pubs the Rams Head, Viaduct, The Railway, The Swan and Newton boozers The Legh Arms, The Millstone, and The Bulls Head.
Another reader – Jeff Wood – also mentioned the above, but he also tagged on a number of other Newton pubs.
His list included The Blue Lion on the High Street, The Oddfellows Arms, Legh Street, The Prince of Wales in Earle Street, The Royal Hotel, Cross Lane and The Ship Inn, Earle Street.
Plenty of other readers contacted us about the lost Newton pubs and clubs.
Gilly Bond got in touch to mention the Red Lion, Pocket Nook, the Lord Nelson in Parr, and the little Black Horse at the bottom of West End Road opposite the Ship at Blackbrook .
“I’m pretty sure all these were open in the early 1980s,” Gilly said.
“I used to play darts for the Red Lion, the landlord big Ken moved on to the Lamb.
“I used to meet my girlfriend (now wife) in the Lord Nelson, the landlord there moved on to the Market Hotel.
“Ask people of pubs in their lifetime, you’ll be surprised with the answers.
“By the way did you know that pro rata St Helens had more Workingmen’s/Labour/Conservative clubs per capita than anywhere else in England in the 1970s?
“They were all full every weekend as well.”
Other readers have mentioned pubs that are currently closed although we have left those out until they become permanent closures with a change of use to go with it.
