A BID to create a memorial stone to honour those who have died in industrial accidents has been given granted permission.

Rainford Parish Council sought approval for the installation of a heritage board and memorial stone on land adjacent to 22A Old Lane.

In an application form, Cllr Rob Reynolds, of Rainford Parish Council, said: "Working with our partners, Rainford Parish Council have erected a heritage board in Crank Village and Heritage Boards and replica Station Signs along the Linear Park through Rainford, which used to be the railway line.

"We are now looking to erect a memorial stone to those who died in industrial accidents in Rainford Parish, along with a heritage board listing all of the individuals we have identified and providing basic details about them, such as their age at the time of death."

Plans added that the parish council has selected the memorial stone and designed the Heritage Board, but would not do any work on site until planning permission was granted.

The plans added the memorial "will not in any way impinge upon the footpath or obstruct the right of way".

Planning officer Tony Jackson said in a report: "The free-standing sign and memorial stone are relatively minor in scale and would have no detrimental impact upon either of the neighbouring residential properties".

It was added: "There would be no obstruction to pedestrians or cyclists with the works falling outside of the adopted highway. Overall, the proposed development respects the character of the area as a whole and would not become a dominant feature within the street scene".

Permission for the memorial sign was granted.
