A DRIVER suffered arm and head injuries after a car hit standing water on the M62 and ended up off the carriageway on its side.

A BMW X6 ended up in a mangled state as it sustained extensive damage in the crash on Sunday night, which happened between Rainhill Stoops and Tarbock Island.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly before 11pm after the one-car collision.

The injured casualty was already out of the vehicle when fire and rescue crews attended. 

They were administered oxygen by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Merseyside Police Roads Policing Unit said the BMW X6 was travelling on the M62 westbound when it "hit standing water and resulted in it leaving the carriageway".

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "MFRS attended an incident on the M62 Westbound at junction seven Rainhill Stoops to junction six Tarbock Island, Rainhill on the evening of Sunday, September 29.

"Crews were alerted at 10.48pm and on scene at 10.56pm, with two fire engines and the search and rescue team attending.

"This was a one-vehicle road traffic collision (RTC) on its side on the embankment.

"One casualty was conscious and breathing and out of the vehicle prior to fire service attendance."

He added: "Crews assisted North West Ambulance Service paramedics at scene, administering oxytherapy to the casualty, who had sustained arm and head injuries.

"Merseyside Police also attended and closed the motorway slip road.

"The casualty was then conveyed into an ambulance and transported to hospital.

"Crews handed over to Merseyside Police to arrange vehicle recovery, before leaving the scene at 11.33pm."
