A BAND will be performing at The Citadel Theatre to pay tribute to their friend and founder, Stephen ‘Buz’ Burrows, who passed away suddenly last year.
On the eve of the performance the musicians, One Eyed God, will also be raising some funds for the event's chosen cause ‘Music for All’ (a UK charity dedicated to changing lives, by improving access to music making).
The show in memory of Buz will take place on Friday, October 18 at the Waterloo Street venue.
One Eyed God have a strong affinity with the theatre, having played their very first gig at The Citadel, supporting Here and Now, on October, 1 2011.
They also lent their support to Nik Turner’s Space Ritual (formerly Hawkwind) there, in September 2013.
Even before that time Buz and One Eyed God’s bass player, Davi, and guitarist, Ste, had performed at the theatre many times - with earlier bands Tuff Rock Dragons, Giant Root Attack, and Igors Milk.
Band members believe is fitting that this memorial gig should take place at the venue which has witnessed the evolution of Buz’s musical career, culminating with the ska-punk reggae vibes that characterises the sound of One Eyed God.
The band attract supporters from across the UK, and beyond. They have played to crowds at festivals of the likes of Boomtown, Bearded Theory, Green Gathering, Equinox and Off the Tracks, and have toured the UK and Europe with their music.
Having lived, rehearsed, and played in St Helens for 13 years, the band has a following within the town and they want to welcome everyone who might enjoy an evening of music and celebrations to come along:.
“Buz’s music has touched so many people along the way. We want to continue his legacy in the best way we know how – by making music, and making people dance and smile," said Vars, Bouzouki player, for One Eyed God
The current line-up, features Davi (Bass), Vars (Bouzouki), Ste (Guitar), Dave (Sax/ Whistle/ Clarinet/ Vocals), Daz (Drums) Rob (Fiddle) and Daryl (Vocals).
One Eyed God will play a catalogue of their eclectic original music – "which ranges from the sublime to the absurd".
Their performance will feature tracks from their 2021 album ‘A Land Fit for Heroes’ and their 2015 album ‘First and Last Freedom’, both of which can be found on music platforms such as Spotify, Bandcamp and ITunes.
Gig support
Eminent St Helens musicians Poisoned Electrick Head, who are friends of Buz and One Eyed God, have offered their support for this gig and will open the show.
They were very well supported at The Citadel last year, in a celebration of the musical heritage of St Helens.
Singer, Damo, also has his own special connection to One Eyed God, as he was the band’s original singer in 2011 and was the lead singer with Igors Milk.
Tickets for this one-time only gig are now available in advance for just £11 plus booking fee from The Citadel’s website.
