SAINTS Women captain Jodie Cunningham is hoping Sunday’s big night of sport showcasing LFC Women’s first game and Saints Women’s Semi Final bid will inspire young girls to look at careers in elite sport.

On Sunday, it’s a huge day for women’s sport with the Totally Wicked Stadium hosting both Liverpool vs Leicester at 2pm followed that same day by the Betfred Women’s Super League Semi-Final between Saints and Wigan at 7:30pm.

It’s an event looking to help put women’s sport on the map, not only in Merseyside but across the UK too.

Talking yesterday Jodie Cunningham Saints Women’s captain said: “Sunday is massive for so many different reasons, obviously it’s Liverpool’s first official game of the season here so they will want a big start to their season and it’s our semi-final so massive game for us in terms of getting through.

“But for me this stadium and what they are doing and both clubs showing dedication to women’s sport in the sense that they are playing two different sports in a few hours, and I don’t think many stadiums in the world have done that especially for women’s sport.

“That in itself is a statement of how seriously women’s sport is being taken now is that it should be on the big stage, and it should be done right.

“We are going to have an amazing occasion on Sunday where we have four fantastic teams on show at this stadium and going forward in the season it’s a massive statement.

“Hopefully young girls can come and be inspired by both sets of athletes, I know people get behind women’s sport in general, but I think this town and Merseyside in general can really get behind this stadium and what they are doing for women’s sport.”

Urging people to come out to watch the games she added: “The support in the stadium means the world and I’ve experienced it a few times where we’ve had a big crowd and they’ve got behind us and honestly when the game gets tough and you feel like you have nothing left but you hear the crowd, then it does give you that extra 1 per cent you need to get through.

“I’m sure Liverpool will appreciate all the support they are going to get and any support we get will be massive and I think whichever game you go to, hopefully you can come to both, then you wont be disappointed with what happens on the pitch here.”

Former Saints star James Roby, who is now the Leadership, Culture and Performance Coach at the club added: “I think it’s fantastic to not only have Saints Women here on our home ground but also the LFC Women who are a fantastic team as well. They can showcase what they are about, women’s sport and elite women’s sport as well.

“I think it’s really good we have this partnership with LFC and use each other’s brand to grow the games and grow women’s sport in general because it is only going in one direction and that’s up.

“The more young girls from not only St Helens but from Merseyside in general that we can encourage to get involved in sport, the better.”
