A GROUP of Good Samaritans helped to rescue a swan from the middle of a busy road to take it to the care of vets.
Bernadette Kerr said she was driving from Morrisons on Monday afternoon, September 9, when she spotted an adult swan in the highway of Thatto Heath Road.
She said she stopped the car to try to come to its aid stopping traffic, while a “kind man” who was walking past managed to shoo the swan off the road to a nearby verge, close to the former Thatto Heath police station site.
“It was trapped when I found it, it couldn’t get any further,” said assistant nurse Bernadette.
With the swan off the road corner up near a fence, and “trying to get back on the road”, Bernadette then parked up at Bowery medical Centre and got her dog blanket and threw it over the swan, holding it for around an hour.

Bernadette said that one woman called the RSPCA but “they didn’t have enough manpower in the area so it was back to square one”.
She asked a woman who came out of the medical centre if she could help phone the vets and she kindly offered to drive Bernadette and the swan to a vet.
“She was kind person, a Slovakian woman, she told me to get in the car and I was in the front seat with the swan.”
Bernadette said the vets at Freckleton Road told her to take the swan to Rutland House in Sutton.
“She took me all the way there, I’d like to thank her,” added Bernadette, 64.
“I don’t know the woman’s name, she’s lived here for 18 years. This was at about 4pm on Monday afternoon.
“It was quite an event and there was an audience watching.
“The Slovakian lady was absolutely fantastic and I’d like to thank everyone who helped.
“The vets have said the swan has been taken to Rutland House and is doing well.”
