A MAN who was found to be carrying a number of knives in St Helens town centre spat in the face of police in St Helens during the early hours, it has been alleged.

Merseyside Police say officers were on patrol at the junction of Westfield Street and Linkway West, St Helens at about 12.25am "when they approached a man to check on his welfare".

While searching the man, he was found in possession of a number of knives, police add.

The man then made off from officers, who chased him before he was detained on Linkway West.

A 36-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife blade in a public place.

In a statement, police said: "A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article in a public place, assault by beating of an emergency worker and common assault of an emergency worker. He is currently in custody.

"During the arrest one of the police officers was spat at in the eyes and mouth.

“Our police officers and staff understand the risks of the job, but they should never have to tolerate violence against them when they are simply attempting to carry out their duties.”
