TWO St Helens venues have been shortlisted as some of the best boozers across the country.

After being named as St Helens' Best Pub and Best Club, The Turks Head and Haydock Reading Room have gone on to win the Merseyside, and the Merseyside and Cheshire competitions.

This means that the Cooper Street and Church Road boozers are among the 16 best pubs and clubs in the country, and will now compete in the 'Super Regional' competition with venues from Greater Manchester, Wales, and the West Pennines.

If successful, the Turks Head and Haydock Reading Room will progress into the final four pubs and clubs in CAMRA's national competition.

With CAMRA'S 'Pub of the Year' competition running annually since 1988, it helps to showcase the country's best venues that serve real ale.

With 14 pulls of ale, as well as a selection of ciders, whisky, gin, and cocktails, The Turks Head has been no stranger to CAMRA awards in recent years.

Voted by CAMRA members, the Cooper Street boozer has been named as St Helens' Pub of the Year various times and also won the Merseyside and Cheshire competition last year.

The pub also serves a popular food menu, hosts live music and quiz nights, and organises trips for its regular customers.

Launched in 1884, there has been a recommitment to cask ale since Nigel Arnold took over Haydock Reading Room.

With three real ales on tap, the Church Road club won the CAMRA 'Committed to Cask' award in 2022 and was named St Helens' Club of the year in 2023.

The pub also hosts popular live music events over the weekend.
