THE leader of St Helens Council has expressed shock and sadness after yesterday's "ferocious" knife attack in Southport.

Two girls have died and a further nine children have been injured, with in critical condition following the stabbings on Monday.

The attack happened during a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga workshop.

Police were called at around 11.50am to Hart Street in Southport following reports of multiple stabbings.

A 17-year-old suspect from Banks, but originally from the Cardiff area, has been arrested and a knife was seized.

Police said they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

St Helens Borough Council leader Cllr Anthony Burns said: "We are deeply shocked and saddened at the events that have happened in Southport.

"My thoughts are with those affected and their loved ones coming to terms with this heartbreaking incident.

"All of us at St Helens Borough Council stand ready to help our City Region partners need at this time. 

"I'd also just want to echo calls for people not to speculate on this situation on this situation until we know more from the police."

Meanwhile, St Helens Theatre Royal has also expressed its shock after the incident.

The venue posted: "St Helens Theatre Royal is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events in Southport.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected."
