A WOMAN who has been on an "extraordinary journey" at a Haydock primary school has retired after four decades in her role.

Acting as the school's friendly caretaker since 1983, Diane Gribben said that Grange Valley has been through many changes throughout her career, adding that it has been a "privilege" to work alongside so many talented colleagues.

With Diane's children attending the Heyes Avenue school, she has witnessed countless pupils grow up and succeed at Grange Valley, and was an important part of the team that achieved an 'Outstanding' Ofsted rating in 2016 and 2024.

With pupils, teachers, and staff all having fond memories with Diane at Grange Valley, a retirement party was held on the school fields on Friday, July 19.

The Mayor of St Helens, Cllr Jeanette Banks, also attended the party to present Diane with a gift for her long service, while Grange Valley will open a special garden in honour of Diane, called Gribben's Garden for staff and children to relax.

Diane said: "I have had an incredible 41 years at Grange Valley Primary School. It’s been a privilege to work alongside such dedicated and talented colleagues.

"It’s also been wonderful to meet all the children over the years, many of whom now bring their own children to the school.

"The school has gone through much change over the years from when my own children attended here but the school has always felt like a second home to me.

"The children have always been happy to arrive at school in the morning especially when I’ve told them the joke of the day. I will miss them all.

"It’s been an extraordinary journey with countless experiences and unforgettable moments. Working with everyone at the school has been a source of immense joy and fulfillment.

"Though I am retiring, the memories and the bonds I’ve built will remain with me always.

"I am thankful to everyone for being such an integral part of my life and for the many wonderful years we’ve shared."
