A 64-YEAR-OLD man has died after suffering what is believed to be a medical episode behind the wheel.

As reported earlier this morning, St Helens Linkway was closed in both directions after a serious road traffic incident.

The incident is reported to have been a one-vehicle collision, where a white Renault box van mounted the grass central reservation around the junction of St Helens Linkway (now known as James Roby Way) and Sherdley Road.

Police believe that the driver of the van suffered a medical episode, and it has now been confirmed that he has died.

Following the tragedy, police are now appealing for witnesses or motorists who may have dashcams fitted to their vehicles, in the area of St Helens Linkway or Scorecross roundabout shortly before 10am this morning.

Police say the Renault van may have stood out due to the tail lift on the rear and orange livery to the front and sides.

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said “Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of a 64-year-old man who has sadly lost his life this morning.

“We have now launched an investigation into his death and his next of kin have been informed. They are being supported by our specially trained liaison officers.

“We are appealing to motorists who were driving along the Linkway at around that time who saw the vehicle shortly before the incident or witnessed the vehicle coming to a stop to please contact us.

“I would urge you to please check your dashcam footage to see if it may have captured the incident which will assist in the investigation.

“Every piece information is vitally important to our investigation to establish what happened.”
