AN inmate who was killed in a Staffordshire prison at the weekend was a man convicted of a murder in St Helens four years ago.
Stephen Strutt, was stabbed at HMP Dovegate, near Uttoxeter, where he was serving a life sentence.
Strutt was one of four people convicted of the murder of Warren Glover, who in 2020 was beaten to death in Toll Bar, St Helens.
The 46-year-old inmate at HMP Dovegate, which is run by Serco, was arrested on suspicion of Strutt's murder.
Staffordshire Police are who carrying out an investigation into his death state they received reports at 9am on Saturday morning and that the prisoner was taken to hospital in a critical condition and sadly died as a result of his injuries.
The murder of Warren Glover
Strutt, from Stalybridge, was one of four people, including a brother and sister, who travelled in a car from Manchester to St Helens and murdered dad-of-one Warren Glover.
Melissa Stubbs, her brother Aaron Stubbs, Stephen Strutt, and Peter Walker, were charged with murder and found guilty after a six-week long trial.
They were each given life sentences.
Warren, who was 33, was struck to the head by Aaron Stubbs in a "heavy blow" with a metal bar on the night of Saturday, June 13, 2020 on French Street at its junction with Thompson Street, Toll Bar.
A court was told he was the victim of a "revenge" attack over "abusive" text messages he sent to ex-girlfriend, Melissa Stubbs and others in response to her making clear their relationship was over.
The four were found guilty after a six-week long trial and sentenced to a combined total of more than 80 years in prison.
