A SUSPECT alleged to have committed driving offences in a stolen car managed to evade police officers on the ground and in the air.

Rainford residents reported witnessing a heavy police presence across the area in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, July 17).

Officers were reported being seen around Church Road, Pit Cross Lane, and Parsons Brow from around 1am, while a helicopter from the National Police Air Service was also reported to have circled the area for hours.

Police have confirmed that the presence was in connection with a driver suspected to have stolen a car and committed driving offences.

The suspect managed to evade capture after abandoning the car on Mossborough Road, and while no arrests have been made, police confirm that inquiries into the incident is ongoing.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We received a report that a driver of a suspected stolen car was committing driving offences in the Rainford area at around 1.20am this morning, Wednesday 17 July.

"Shortly afterwards the vehicle was found abandoned on a field off Mossborough Road.

"Officers attended the scene but the suspect had fled the area."
