A STAR reader has shared three wartime photographs of the St Helens Sea Cadet Corps.

Nick Hampson discovered the pictures underneath a drawer of a desk that belonged to his father Peter, who founded and commanded the organisation from 1942 to 1947.

In a message to the Star, Nick wrote: "Some of your readers might like to identify their younger selves, or their parents or grandparents, in these images from 1942 and 1943.

"The photographs have just been found wedged underneath a drawer in my father's desk.

"Some notes found with the photographs tell us that Admiral Sir Percy Noble is leading the inspection at the inaugural parade."

Lieutenant Peter Hampson is at the rear of the inspecting party, just behind Councillor J Hughes, the Mayor of St Helens.

Nick added: "The chap standing behind the ranks of cadets is Chief Petty Officer Jack Denton.

"In the 1943 civic parade Lt Peter Hampson (who was 25 at the time) is followed by Sub lieutenant P Spence and Sub lieutenant Christopher Pennington.

"As an aside, Pennington was the Marconi radio operator who sent the SOS message from the SS Volturno disaster in October 1913, and he was the radio instructor for the Cadet Corps."
