A FUNDRAISING appeal has been launched in memory of a community rugby league coach who died suddenly at the age of 39.

Dad-of-two Michael Cole, a former player with Pilkington Recs who went on to coach at the club's junction section and at Blackbrook Royals, passed away this week.

Friends and family have been left shocked and devastated.

Now members of the rugby league community have set up a Gofundme appeal in his memory.

A statement on the page from friends read: "Following the sudden and heart-breaking news of Coley’s death at the young age of 39, we are looking for donations to support the loving family, Jax, Lillie and beloved wife Carol.

"Coley was known to many as straight-talking and cheeky, charmed with a persona that could only lift you up to his level of enthusiasm and outlook on life.

"Loud and busy, everybody felt his warming presence the moment he entered the room giving you no option but to smile and laugh.

"Everybody that knew Coley understood his love for rugby. He made it his passion to transfer his character into all the lives he touched, especially young, aspiring rugby league players, both boys and girls. The only things he cherished more were his family and friends.

"Any donations, no matter how big or small, will go a long way to supporting his family for the future❤️"

So far more than £2,500 has been pledged.

Michael, known as Coley, came through the ranks at Pilkington Recs as part of a talented under-18s squad in the early 2000s.

He went on to play open age rugby before coaching Recs and Blackbrook Royals at junior levels, where he helped establish girls' sections at both clubs.

In a statement posted on social media, Pilkington Recs said: “All at Pilkington Recs are devastated to hear of the passing of former player and coach Michael Cole.

“'Coley' will be remembered by many people for many things; husband to Carol, father to Lillie and Jackson, friend, team-mate, coach, the list goes on.

“We will remember him for all of the above and more. Whatever your memories of Mike are, we are certain it will have been with a smile and a rugby ball.

“Our thoughts are with Carol, Lillie, Jackson and all of Mike's family at this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, Blackbrook Royals, where Mike had helped set up the girls’ junior section, sent their thoughts and prayers to his family.

The Royals statement read: “Coley joined us last year and set up the girls' section that is now thriving with the same enthusiasm he brought to the game and life itself.

“He leaves behind a lasting legacy of laughter, light-heartedness and a whole section of girls rugby league that we must continue to support and progress in his name.”

'We'll forever be grateful.'
