WORK is set to take place on the CYCLOPS signal-controlled junction following site inspections and feedback from users.

St Helens Council says it is taking the opportunity to carry out the works as it starts on creating a new walking and cycling facility in the Lea Green area.

Starting on Monday, July 15, the next phase of works will link the junction of Elton Head Road / Marshalls Cross Road adjacent to Sutton Academy up to and through Sherdley Park, towards Sutton Park to the north.

While the cycle route works are ongoing, the council says it is taking the opportunity to carry out planned remedial works to the CYCLOPS signal-controlled junction on Marshalls Cross Road, where all seven complementary routes are joined.

This is following feedback from users, site inspections and observations.

The remedial works are programmed to commence on site in late July 2024 - during the school summer holidays to minimise disruption - and include amendments to the Mill Lane arm of the junction and realignment to the central island on Marshall Cross Road for traffic heading north bound.

The works are envisaged to take up to two weeks to complete (one week for each location) with road closures required for certain aspects of the works with associated diversions in place.

Signs will be erected on site throughout the duration of the works to notify and advise road users of any restrictions imposed to safely undertake the works, the council added.

The CYCLOPS junction – also known as St Helens Southern Gateway project, has had mixed reviews after its eventual unveiling in time for Reminisce Festival in September 2023.

The aim of the junction is to make it safer to cross the roads for pedestrians and cyclists alike using the coloured walkways.
