A man arrested after a seven hour stand off with police yesterday is still in custody.

Armed police were called to flats near to Liverpool Road, Greenbank and Glover Street shortly after 9am yesterday.

The marksmen were sent after reports a man at the properties - which faces the West Point retail park - was making threats.

A police negotiator was also called in.

Throughout the day witnesses alleged a man could be seen hanging out of a window with a knife.

After a seven hour stand off, at around 4.30pm, a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and affray.

He remains in police custody this morning.

The scene caused many people to come and watch from behind cordons throughout the day, with many parking up on West Point Retail Park which faced the flats where the incident was unfolding.
