A PRIMARY school has enjoyed more sporting success - this time on the rugby pitch.

Eccleston Mere's Year five and six rugby league squad won the Wargrave Trophy for the first time.

The competition involved eight teams from across St Helens and was held at Wargrave CE Primary School, in Newton-le-Willows.

Eccy Mere won all of their matches and didn't concede a single try during the day.

Gareth Helsby, teacher and PE co-ordinator at Eccleston Mere, said: "We knew we had an abundance of talented rugby players at Eccy Mere but I was so impressed by their attitude and their stamina in hot conditions.

"We lost in the semi-final last year so the children were determined to go that one step further this year.

"I'm so proud of them all."

The success comes on the back of Eccleston Mere's year 5/6 athletics team winning the Y5/6 Quadkids competition earlier this month.
