A MUCH-LOVED St Helens pub has been crowned the region's finest.

The Turks Head has landed the coveted prize of Merseyside Pub of the Year from CAMRA.

The award comes after it retained its crown as St Helens and Districts CAMRA Pub of the Year earlier this year.

The Turks beat off stiff competition from venues across the region to claim the Merseyside prize.

In a statement St Helens CAMRA confirmed the news: "Congratulations to The Turks Head on winning CAMRA's Merseyside Pub of the Year for the second year running.

"They were up against the Roscoe Head in Liverpool, The Magazine in New Brighton and The Grasshopper in Southport.

"Congratulations to all the pubs in the competition."

The Turks, on Cooper Street, St Helens will now go forward to the regional competition for Merseyside and Cheshire.

Last year the pub won that title and was voted as one of the top 16 pubs in the country by CAMRA members.
