A MAN is set to appear in court after being charged in connection with a fatal motorway crash.

It comes after a young woman died following a serious collision which closed the M62 in both directions in the early hours of Saturday, May 27, 2023.

Just after midnight, Merseyside Police received a report of a collision on the westbound carriageway of the M62 between junctions six for Tarbock Island and five for Huyton.

The crash involved a grey Vauxhall Corsa and a silver Mercedes C180.

Emergency services attended and a man and woman were taken to hospital.

Sadly, a 21-year-old woman was pronounced dead, while a man received medical treatment which was said to be not life-threatening.

She was later named as Kate Swale, with her family expressing their ‘sincere thanks for all the overwhelming love, support, cards and flowers they received from relatives and friends’.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released under investigation, but now a suspect has been charged.

Jamie Hughes faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving without due care or consideration while unfit through drugs.

The particulars of the former charge allege that the 23-year-old caused the death of Kate Swale on May 27, 2023, by driving a Vauxhall Corsa dangerously on the M62 between junctions six and five.

The latter charge alleges that, on the same date and stretch of road, he caused the death of Kate Swale by driving a Vauxhall Corsa without due care and attention, and at a time when he was unfit to drive through drugs.

Hughes, of Belton Road in Huyton, is due to make a first appearance in relation to the charges before Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates’ Cout this afternoon, Wednesday.

A moving tribute was issued by Kate’s family following her death, and this read: “From the moment Kate was born, everyone fell in love with her.

“She was idolised by her parents Pat and Marvin, her brothers, grandparents, aunties and cousins, who were like brothers and sisters to her.

“Kate enjoyed travelling and she was looking forward to planning a summer holiday with her friends.

“Kate will be sadly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her.”

Merseyside Police appealed for information following the crash, and for anyone who saw or had dashcam footage to come forward.

“Every piece of information or footage could be vital in establishing what happened,” an officer said.
