A POPULAR band from the 1980s - and who have retained a cult following ever since - will travel to St Helens next week to play at the Citadel Theatre.

Formed in Fife in Scotland in 1981, Big Country grew to have big hits both in the UK and America, with debut album 'The Crossing' reaching the Top 20 in the states.

With the band's follow-up album 'Steeltown' reaching Number 1 in the UK album charts, Big Country's popularity grew even further and they went on to support Queen and Roger Daltrey, in addition to their own UK, US, and European tours.

Following lead singer Stuart Adamson's death in 2001, the band reformed in 2007 and two of the original members have been working on upcoming shows as well as 'heritage' books, documentaries, and anniversary albums.

One of the spots on the band's 'Return to Steeltown' tour - commemorating the 40th year anniversary of their second album - is at the Citadel Theatre, on Friday, June 7.

With a rich history in St Helens, several bands have taken to the Citadel's stage since the venue joined forces with the Liverpool-based promoters Glasswerk last September, including 90s band Space, Ian Prowse, and Starsailor frontman James Walsh.

The venue's interesting line-up of events will continue with tribute act performances from 'The Tom Petty Show', 'The Amy Winehouse Experience', 'Just Radiohead', and many more in the coming months.

The Citadel will also showcase a variety of bands in the upcoming St Helens Town Centre Music Festival on Sunday, June 9.

Speaking previously to the Star about the Citadel's relaunch and events programme, a spokesperson said: "We are delighted with the relaunch of the Citadel.

"Since September 2023, we have welcomed lots of fantastic acts, and we are really pleased to see the iconic St Helens venue come back to life. The feedback from those attending has been brilliant, with many saying to us that they cannot wait to come back."
