This year’s search for St Helens Star’s best in a whole host of categories started with hair and At Gems was crowned our first winner quickly followed by Burchall’s and their pies.
Next up were picture perfect nails with Nails by Mandy taking the title and then we moved onto roast dinners with customers and readers sending their nominations and votes for their Sunday favourites.

Seven tasty roast dinners in St Helens made the shortlist for Best for Roast Dinner with The Moss Bank taking this year’s coveted crown.

Stephen Lawler is the owner of the Moss Bank Road venue taking over at the pumps in December 2021.
Stephen, who also lives in Moss Bank, said: “I had a number of venues around St Helens and the surrounding area and wanted to invest locally.
“I’ve always been a pub operator and my family have been in the business for more than 40 years.
“My dad opened his first place in 1982.
“The Moss Bank is a dog friendly and child friendly pub and restaurant with a large beer garden.
“We offer live sport and live music each week and cater for functions and special occasions and celebrations.
“We serve fantastic, fresh, home cooked food at great prices and cater for people of all ages and tastes.
“We specialise in Sunday roasts with a choice of three meats – chicken, beef or lamb – and Yorkshire pudding wraps.”
The now award-winning Sunday favourites come with roast potatoes and mashed potatoes, carrots, turnips, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower finished off with a Yorkshire pudding and gravy.

There were dozens of nominations for this popular place with customers saying it’s “hands down” the best roast dinner around.
Stephen, who is 36, says customers like the warm and friendly atmosphere at The Moss Bank teamed with local staff and great food with the venue recently being refurbished.
He said: “The best thing about my job is seeing the difference we make to the local community.
“We love putting smiles on people’s faces and seeing our customers happy.
“When we found out we’d made the shortlist for St Helens’ Best for Roast Dinners 2024 we were totally elated.
“It’s recognition for all the hard work the kitchen staff and bar team put in every day.
“We were thrilled to be nominated by so many of our loyal customers and totally overwhelmed to win.
“Huge thanks to everyone who took time to vote for us and show us their support - without their sponsorship and patronage none of this would be possible.”
