A COUPLE who brought “Haydock’s last pub” back to life have thanked the community for their support after handing over the reins.
The Star reported last year as couple Paul and Mel Clayton took over at the Owl’s Nest, on West End Road, which relaunched for its new era last October after having been closed for months.
Paul and Mel have restored the Owl as a central part of the community again.
They set out a mission to get the Owl “back established as a centre for the community to meet.”
Repair works have been undertaken on the roof, with internal works also taking place.
The Owl has been restored as a venue customers can watch live sports, and host live entertainment, with karaoke and weekly quiz nights also among its offerings.
In April the couple announced with a heavy heart that they have had to step down due to Mel's health.

They hope that the legacy they have left can continue with the Owl continuing to be a thriving part oof the Haydock community.
“The pub is going from strength to strength and there are plans to do the beer garden for the Euros this summer,” said Paul, who has previously also been at the helm at the Starting Gate and the Windle pubs.
“One of the staff who worked for us has taken over and they are going to carry on doing it and put their own touch on it.
“We’d like to say thank you for the support while we were there. It is a great welcome to Haydock and the Owl is in safe hands.”
