A SOCIAL club that has stood proud for more than a century is set to close its doors for the final time this week.

Established in 1908, Garswood Conservative and Working Men's Club has been a popular venue over the years.

In the 19th century, working men's clubs were set up as private social club to provide recreation and education for working class men and their families.

Each working men's club was usually affiliated with a political party, such as the Conservatives or Labour, but they mainly became recreational and social venues as time went on.

Located on Station Road next to Garswood railway station, the 'Conny Club' has held various live music and charity nights over the years.

It has also attracted customers for its live sports and pool tables, and has been known as a cheap venue for members.

Following the difficulties of the cost of living crisis, Garswood's 'Conny Club' has announced its imminent closure in a public statement.

On social media, the club said: "It is with great sadness that due to spiralling costs and much reduced income, we have to advise that the club will cease trading on Friday, May 10.

"The club was established in 1908 and survived two World Wars.

"We thank the staff, committee, and all of our loyal members who have supported us over the years."
