THE St Helens Labour group has voted Anthony Burns as their new leader - paving the way for him to take the political reins at the council next month.

Councillor Burns is set to succeed his ally David Baines, who is stepping down as council leader so that he can contest the St Helens North seat at the next general election.

Councillor Burns, a long-standing councillor and cabinet member, secured the leadership vote at Labour’s annual group meeting on Monday evening.

The Blackbrook councillor, who previously represented Haydock, has served as cabinet member for wellbeing, culture and heritage, will formally take up the role at the annual council meeting on Wednesday, May 15.

Cabinet appointments, including that of deputy leader, will also be declared at that meeting.

There are no local council elections in St Helens this year following the decision to move to 'all-out' elections every four years.

Councillor Burns will have a busy in-tray as he takes over as leader, with the first phase of the regeneration of St Helens town centre due to begin in the coming months and the transformation of Earlestown in the pipeline.

The council, which has had its funding from central government cut considerably over the past decade, faces huge demands and pressures on its finances, with the costs of adult social care and children's services, which is placing pressure on town hall budgets.

Incoming leader's statement

In a statement released last night, Councillor Burns said: "I am absolutely delighted to have been chosen as leader of St Helens Labour Group

"I have been humbled by all the kind words and by the support I have had and am truly grateful for the opportunity.

"I would like to give special thanks to David for his excellent leadership over the last five years. He has left enormous boots to fill and has left a tremendous legacy.

"However, he has also left a great example to follow and laid the foundations of change that will deliver the best for all our borough.

"The work starts now, and I promise I will give my very best. It is an honour to lead such a fantastic group of people who are all committed to making our borough the best it can be for every resident we represent.

"I’ll say more in the coming weeks."
