TWO men are being questioned by police on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm after an alleged assault in St Helens town centre on Saturday night (March 2).

As reported by the Star earlier today, a man was found unconscious on Henry Street, which is a short distance from the Landings Roundabout.

The man, in his 50s, suffered a cut to the back of his head and a suspected fractured eye socket and was taken to hospital.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening, police say.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses after they were called to the scene at 11.50pm.

Following CCTV enquiries two men, aged 26 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

They were in custody earlier today.

Detective Inspector Louise Johnson said a number of lines of enquiry to “establish what has taken place in the lead up to the man being injured”.

She added: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Henry Street at around 11.50pm last night who saw anything or has any information which could assist with our investigation to contact us.”
