A COUPLE dedicated to improving their local community has planted their first batch of flowers in time for the start of spring.
After being depressed by the neglected state of the town, Stephen Mousdell began to start revamping flower boxes, replacing planters and planting an arrangement of flowers across St Helens and Haydock in 2021.
His dedication was quickly appreciated by residents as hundreds of positive comments have been sent his way, as well as more than a thousand pounds in donations to continue his work.
Stephen was also recognised at St Helens Town Hall with the mayor's Good Citizen Award for his efforts, and his partner Kev Poole also became hooked on the project to improve their local area.

Spending years improving the community, Ste and Kev have been out planting a fresh bunch of flowers and replaced tired planters this week with the aim of getting Haydock in bloom for the start of spring,
The couple has also been cleaning up tired road signs and installing lights to the colliery monuments and landmarks in Haydock.
Kev said: "We’re continuing to do this to add some colour and improve the look of local communities where needed or where areas have been neglected due to public funding limitations.
"In peak season we also try to involve local schools and volunteer groups where possible."
The Haydock-based couple also received rave reviews for their mobile DJ business last year, which saw them travel to several weddings, birthdays, and private events, to cater their songs to each crowd.
